When the refugees sought out sanctuary in Europe, several countries –Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Norway and France, among others– responded with the construction of more anti-migration fences and walls than any other time in history, including the Cold War. Not only are refugees shut out by these walls; they also shut out and kill native species. The fences have put a stop to the seasonal migration routes of these species, which can restrict gene flow in populations.
“Many biologists are concerned that recent anti-immigration measures could stall, or even undo, the monumental strides that conservationists have achieved over the past several decades,” said Sarah Emerson, a reporter for Vice’s Motherboard. For example, Slovenia’s fence will cut through important areas of the Dinaric Mountain range, threatening important populations of gray wolves, brown bears and lynx’s, all of which are considered a conservation priority by the European Union. Being built in disagreement with rules and laws set in place by associations such as Scientific and Cultural Organization, Europe’s Habitat Directive and United Nations Educational; a huge amount of these fences could even be deemed as illegal.
Many conversationalists agree that countries should strengthen their alliances with other countries for the sake of the suffering refugees and the animals who are dying due to the lack of further thought. European governments need to evaluate the potential harm that border walls could present to native species, and if not, our environment’s conditions will further plummet and the damage could be irreversible.
