The Real Origin Of Christmas

Summer Boling, Reporter

While many equate Christmas as a Christian holiday, it actually has roots in a far more orthodox practice.

Yuletide, as it was originally known, is a Germanic pagan holiday in the heart of winter, dedicated to the Norse gods of that time. The main goal was to meet in a temple and feast in the name of the season, however most modern-day traditions started from Yule specifically.

The biggest example, the yule log or Christmas tree was originally intended to bring back “good spirits” for the spring season, in hopes of ensuring a good year to come. People would often put their wishes inside of the ornaments they put on the tree, in hopes of seeing them fulfilled.

Along with this, Christmas is almost entirely made up of traditions originally founded in Yule, as when Christianity began to spread along Germanic territories, they claimed the holiday as their own.
