When Should Christmas Season Start?

Christmas will be here before we know it but first comes Thanksgiving. This time of year is when the debates usually start about when it’s acceptable to start celebrating Christmas.

Many people have different opinions about when the decorations should start going up for Christmas. Some start listening to holiday music and getting in the spirit the day after Halloween or even sooner, while others prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving at the very least.

“I don’t start celebrating Christmas until Thanksgiving is over,” said senior Bridget Rajarajan.

Thanksgiving is a pretty major holiday in the United States where people take the time to count their blessings and really focus on how thankful they are for what they have. Some believe skipping straight to Christmas causes Thanksgiving to be overlooked and the true meaning behind it isn’t fully appreciated.

“When people start celebrating a month early it takes away the joy of Thanksgiving,” said Rajarajan. “Thanksgiving reminds us to give thanks and it helps us feel closer to the people we love. Christmas is fantastic, but we should cherish both holidays instead of just ignoring Thanksgiving.”

Others would rather get ready for Christmas earlier so they can celebrate it for as long as possible.

“I always start decorating for Christmas on November 1,” said senior Taylor Stevens.

At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter when people start getting ready for Christmas. Different people have different preferences and Christmas is an amazing time of year so it makes sense why some people like to drag it out, but it also makes sense why others don’t want to rush it so they can truly enjoy it when it comes.

“I just like to celebrate Christmas early because it makes me happy,” said Stevens.
