In 2011, Dance Moms made its debut on the hit network Lifetime. Dance Moms is a show based originally on six dancers from ages 6-13 and their journey through the dance competition world. The show wasn’t only based on the girls, but also their strict dance coach, Abby Lee Miller. Each week, the girls would learn several new dances to keep in the same week for competition. This leads to a high-stress environment that lets the drama unfold each week.

I have to admit this show is my guilty to pleasure. I have been a huge Dance Moms fan since I was in third grade. Though this show can get heated at times, there were a lot of lessons that I learned through the show as silly as it may be.

1.) Everyone’s Replaceable

This was Abby Lee Miller’s favorite saying, she was always saying it to the girls. She was trying to teach the girls not to hold yourself to a high standard and that there is always someone better out there. Various times in the show, she would bring in a better dancer to replace another dancer to drive the point home. In life, you can not be too cocky because you are always replaceable, even when you think you aren’t.

2.) Guilty By Association

Abby Lee Miller was famous for punishing the girls for actions their mothers would do. Often times, the girls and the viewers would realize just how strict their coach was. One time on the show Kelly, Brooke and Paige’s mother, forgot to put chair stoppers on Paige’s chair for her solo. Abby didn’t like Kelly’s laziness and Abby threw the chair at Paige. This left Paige crying even though it wasn’t her fault and she lost her solo for the week.

3.) Save Your Tears For The Pillow

Abby always taught the girls when you are in public or being filmed when you feel like crying for an unhappy result you shouldn’t. She would always say that only babies cry. If the girls were to cry on stage for getting anything less than first place, they would be in huge trouble.

4.) Life Is Unfair

It was always rumored that Maddie got the best solo’s on the team and always got more casting calls. One competition Abby decided to give Maddie and Chloe the same exact solo. It is still being debated on who won that solo. Chloe technically won first place, but for the show, Abby went to the judges and got the scores changed to have Maddie win. This goes to show you that Maddie always got the better choreography.

5.) The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side

Many dancers when welcome on to the team decided that this team wasn’t for them and they would go to the Candy Apples Dance Studio. Kendall Vertes once went to the Candy Apples due to the unfair treatment at the ALDC. After a few weeks, Kendall and her family realized that ALDC was the better studio. This point goes to show that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, everything has its downfalls.
