On January 26, 2020, a tragic accident occured. NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant, along with seven others were involved in an accidental helicopter crash, in Kobe’s personal helicopter. The helicopter caught on fire and crashed after hitting the mountainside due to heavy fog. The other passengers were John Altobelli, the head baseball coach at Orange Coast College, was killed along with his wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa. Christina Mauser, the girl’s basketball coach, also died in the crash. Mother and daughter, Sarah and Payton Chester also died in the crash. The daughter Payton was Giannas teammate. The other member was the pilot, his name was Ara Zobayan. They were on their way to Kobe’s daughter Gianna’s game. Kobe was only 41 years old and Gianna was 13.
This really shocked the entire world. Kobe was just with LeBron James congratulating him on passing him on the NBA all time scoring list. Kobe posted on social media the day before congratulating LeBron. LeBron has just now spoke on the death. He posted on Instagram Monday night 1/27/20, saying he had no words to describe what he has went through with this passing. He also put that it made him cry just typing the post. There was a video from LeBron getting off the Lakers plane after he figured out about the death he was crying and very emotional. LeBron and Kobe had a good relationship and Kobe was one of LeBron’s idols. Kobe and LeBron were teammates on the 2008 and 2012 Team USA Olympic Teams. They won gold both years.
Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Chris Paul was also close with Kobe. He sat out during their game vs The Dallas Mavericks. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said that no one will ever wear 24 again for the Mavericks. Chris Paul and Kobe were also apart of the 2008 and 2012 Team USA Olympic Teams.
Dwyane Wade also had something to say about the tragic incident. “Heroes come and go LEGENDS live forever!! #8 #24”. He also was on Instagram talking about the incident and very emotional, he was also on the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Teams.
Everyone in the NBA were in shock yesterday. In every game they would have a moment of silence. They also took a 24 second violation and then a 8 second violation to pay respect to Kobe who wore 8 and 24 in his 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers. The closest player that Kobe knew the most was Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving. When Kyrie figured out about the news he was just getting finished shooting around before the Nets vs New York Knicks game. After he figured out he got very emotional and left the Madison Garden ( the Knicks arena).

Aside from the awards Kobe Bryant was a great person and father. He influenced so many people and kids idolized him. This death was very hard for me, the Lakers are my favorite team and Kobe has always been my favorite player. I’ve idolized him since 5th grade when I started watching basketball. I wanted to be just like him. I wore 24 in basketball because he did, I only wear his shoes, I have his jerseys, I have tons of his posters on my walls, and I have his clothes. I was in so much shock on Sunday when I heard the news. I try to believe it’s not true, but I know it is. I loved Kobe, he will forever be missed.
