February is the shortest month of the year and yet it is considered one of the busiest months. The whole month of February is centered around love. Valentine’s day falls on February 14th and it is a day where we show our loved ones a little more love than any other day. While Valentine’s day might be the first event that comes to mind when thinking about the month of February, but what comes to my mind is Black History Month. Which brings me to this month’s quote.

My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” —Desmond Tutu

It hurts my heart that there once was a time where we were judged on things can’t control like our race. It wasn’t only being judged, but also treated. Our race doesn’t define us or hold us to a certain standard.

Black History Month shows the courage that people like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and so many activists had to go through just to get an ounce of equality and fair treatment. Imagine the world if Rosa Parks did move from her seat on the bus or if Martin Luther King never delivered his famous “I Have A Dream Speech”. If these brave people didn’t fight for what they believed in our world would still be segregated and a place where I wouldn’t want to live.  I am thankful for these brave people who sacrifice their lives for the better of others.

At the end of the day, we are only human we must treat others like the way we want to be treated. We all have things we can’t help, so don’t judge others for what they can’t help. Most of the time we don’t know the full story, so be mindful. While race or ethnicity aren’t the only things that people are judging theses day, gender and sexuality are rising to the top too.

This month we need to show our love. Try and compliment others this month. Be mindful of others this month. We also need to be thankful that we now live in a time where we can love others for who they are and not have arbitrary. Have a great February and throw those hearts up!
